The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) expresses deep concern over the continued and persistent violations of human rights arising from violent mob actions against individuals accused of witchcraft and other forms of superstition across the country.
Recently, in Ndola, a woman lost her property after being accused of witchcraft. It was alleged that a coffin, carried by pallbearers, supernaturally guided its movement to the home of the supposed perpetrator. In response, an irate mob burned down her house. In addition, there have been disturbing reports in recent weeks of individuals claiming that their private parts have mysteriously vanished.
These unfounded allegations have resulted in the assault of innocent people, destruction of property, and damage to vehicles. Tragically, a woman who happens to be a mother has lost her life today under similar circumstances.
Mob justice is not only a violation of the law but also stands in direct opposition to Christian values and biblical principles. In a nation that identifies itself as Christian, it is imperative that the sanctity of human life is upheld and that every citizen is protected from harm and abuse.
Against this backdrop, EFZ strongly condemns all forms of superstition-driven mob violence.
We reaffirm that human life is sacred, reflecting the very character and nature of God. Scripture reminds us that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
Therefore, no individual should ever be subjected to the brutality of mob justice.
EFZ further urges all citizens to uphold the rule of law and to allow lawful authorities to administer justice.
We also call upon relevant authorities to address these matters swiftly and decisively, recognizing that justice delayed is justice denied.
Furthermore, we call upon law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate, arrest, and prosecute all individuals involved in these acts of violence.
Evidence circulating on social media clearly identifies some of the perpetrators, and appropriate legal action must be taken without delay.
Finally, we call upon the Church to engage in prayer, reflection, and continued pastoral guidance, encouraging members to refrain from participating in or endorsing any form of lawlessness.
